FCA had long standing knowledge of a defect that caused water to enter some of its vehicles causing a bad odor and mold, but never told customers, a new class action lawsuit alleges.
Plaintiff Effie Johnson Norman filed the class action lawsuit against FCA US, LLC June 22 in a Michigan federal court alleging violations of federal warranty laws.
She’s looking to represent anyone who purchased or leased a Ram 1500 vehicle sold with a defect that allegedly allows water to enter the cabin, causing foul odors, mold or mildew, electrical system disruption, and rear cabin airbag contamination.
She says the cars are not adequately sealed, leading to water intrusion in the rear cabin.
The water destroys the interior of the vehicles, leaving permanent stain marks, foul odors, mold, and mildew, and contaminates and fouls the rear-cabin airbag and propellant, Norman says.
She says the defect can even short the vehicles’ electrical system such as the push-to-start ignition system, locks, windows and lights.
Norman says FCA has known about the defect since at least 2016 based on a flood of complaints and warranty claims.
“Nevertheless, FCA has never disclosed the Water Intrusion Defect; rather, it actively conceals it.”
FCA is also accused of neglecting to recall the vehicles or extend their warranties, leading to major out-of-pocket expenses for customers.
She’s looking to represent a nationwide Class of Ram 1500 owners, and an Alabama Subclass.
Norman is suing for breach of warranty and fraudulent omission and seeking certification of the class action, damages, fees, costs and a jury trial.
The news comes after more than 370,000 Dodge and Ram vehicles were recalled because their electronic stability control (ESC) warning lights might not illuminate even if there is a problem.

Just took my brand new 2022 1500 Red edition through its first car wash. While going through the wash noticed water coming in through the dash corners both on driver and passenger side. Taking it to the dealer tomorrow morning to report the issue. The truck is under 300 miles at the moment. Just took delivery a couple of weeks ago.
I currently have a 2020 Ram 1500 DT with the same issue and am dealing with the dealership to resolve. Rear sliding window cracked on plastic which allows water to run down both sides of the rear window causing foul smell. Going on 2 days with no word from Ram on window fix.
Just had the water intrusion issue! headliner is stained in back, 35,000 miles on it now basic warranty goes out at 3600. I had purchased the best extended warranty and was told that it does not cover Manufacture seals or gaskets that leak. I now have to make a trip to the dealership to just show them my miles. They had pushed my appointment off where i more then likely would have went over 36,000 and then it would no longer be covered. I dont think i could ever buy a new Ram again just do to the fact of you should not have water intrusion in a New 60,000 truck!
Yes I have experienced the same issues in my 2017 Dodge ram crew cab mold and moisture on the inside of the back glass. Called Dealership and they said they haven’t heard of such.
2019 Ram 1500, 11450 miles. Window frame cracked in 2 places, water entered cab. Dealer repaired, leaked worse after repair. Back again, repaired, I hope. Will wash it soon, that will tell.

A couple of summers ago, I opened my Dodge Ram 1500 SLT after a rain storm and the floors were soaked. I’ve been having major electrical issues since. My passenger door doesn’t roll down, sometimes my a/c works, sometimes it doesn’t.
I replaced the windshield thinking that was problem.
On July 10, 2022, the right front ball joint broke away from my 2020 RAM 1500, while I was driving 70 mph on the highway. As a result, my vehicle skidded out of control and my break line broke making it difficult to stop my truck and extremely scary. Although, I survived this dangerous accident it has left me with PTSD and I am extremely fearful of getting back into my truck—that I used to love so much. I need someone from management at the Corporate Office to help me get out of this vehicle. I have opened a customer service request, case# 81410664, and I have called them several times asking to have my case resolved and escalated to management, to no avail. Customer service has told me several times that they cannot and will not help me get out of my truck through the buyback program, due to current lemon law requirements. Customer service also offered me free oil changes, which is a huge slap in my face considering the circumstances. On Thursday July 21, 2022, customer service rep Clarice told me that she would escalate my case for further review. Today, July 25, 2022, I was told that my request was denied and that no one can help me. This is unacceptable! I purchased my truck in good faith and I’m still paying on my truck although it’s sitting at the dealership with the wheel hanging off. Chrysler sold me a defected vehicle and should make this right by either buying back my vehicle or replacing it with a vehicle equal to my purchase price. I am trying to resolve this issue without taking legal actions against the manufacturer and dealership, which is why I writing this letter. Please put yourself in my position and treat me like you would want to be treated in this awful situation.
Additional Information: A year after purchasing my truck, the u-joints in the steering column had to be replaced due to excessive rusting. This too is highly unusual for a brand new vehicle also. The RAM Service Department Manager here in Elizabethtown, KY stated that the right ball joint on my truck was also extremely rusty and it may have caused the incident on July 10, 2022. I recorded this conversation with the service department manager, during which he also stated that this is clearly a manufacture defect and was not any fault of mine. The General Manager at Swope Ram in Elizabethtown, KY told me to contact Chrysler and that he could not help me, although I purchased the vehicle from his dealership. This is really ridiculous. I am a long time customer of Chrysler and I do not expect to be treated like my life does not matter. Moreover, I do not expect to be stuck with a piece of junk of a truck when I purchased a brand new truck for that very purpose. It is clear that there is excessive rusting on my truck, causing life-threating vehicle malfunctions.
That said, I hope that you understand what I am dealing with and that someone from management will make this right.

My 2017 Ram 1500 Eco Diesel crew cab has water the fills up both rear doors every time it rains. Both doors take on a significant amount of water and I have even experienced minor leaks in the driver side door during heavier rains. This is the first vehicle where I have experienced this kind of issue
Every time it rains, regardless of how hard my rear doors fill up with water and will not drain properly. I have also heard water leaking into my driver side door from the window, but it isn’t near as bad as both rear doors.

2018 1500 eco diesel… ram told me the water coming from the front window when infact I reverse park my truck up hill. Ummm water does not run up hill. Rust under seats and flood in the rear under seat compartments.
Water leaking at light above rear window. I had same priblem the leak would fill up the compatment under the left rear seat. Replaced light and seal to fix issue. Dealer did zip.

I have had water problems as well. 3rd brake light and it still leaks. Also water keeps get in to my pcm and ecm. they have replace it several times through extended warranty. replaced 5 batteries. my warranty expired and I paid 1,900 for work this winter because it happened again so they cut up the wire harness that they replaced and taped in new parts. they put 2 zip ties on the pipes above the modules and harness and an old parts bag under the plastic windshield shield. its ridiculous. I called customers service warranty directly and she said thats not there problem to fix . Im suppose to take it some where on my own. Are you kidding me.

I have a 2019 Ram 1500, and just last week noticed my back glass frame has 2 cracks in it and is leaking water when it rains, or when I wash the truck. I tried using a small bead of silicone on it to try and stop it. It helped, but didn’t stop it. Just not near as much water gets in.
Having the same issue on my 2019 Ram 1500. Truck smells like mold with large stains on the back headliner and around one of the airbags.

Does this lawsuit include Dodge Durrango 1999? Terrible rainfall in the back comparment. Had to use a bucket to get the water out. Major leak front area windshield leaks everytime it rained. My 2019 Ram 1500 has been in the shop for 2 weeks attempting to repair the rear window. Installed a new one last Friday. Picked it up Saturday, leaked worse than the original. Resealed the window, installed new brake light . And tested good. Time will tell, but it’d be nice to have some backing if it happens again. Please add me.
2019 Ram 1500. Back window started leaking took to dealer they contracted it out to a third party they resealed the window without removing the window knowing the frame is cracked. Guaranteed for 1 year less than 72 hours later started leaking again. Next step replaced the entire rear window cost me $1900. RAM Cares said we don’t care to help you. Warranty doesn’t cover water leak even though RAM. Chrysler and FCA knows this is a huge issue and refuses to address it. Several people I know have had their window replaced for free or with paying a deductible but then I get charged full price.

Please add me. My 2017 and 2019 3500 had water leaks and mold. I only have one lung and it was impossible for me to sit inside both trucks. Every time that I brought them in because of the problems, they wouldn’t document it and said that they looked for a leak and couldn’t find one. Because of this problem, I had to trade in the trucks. I lost over $70,000 because of the condition of these trucks.

I have a 2017 1500 ram Laramie truck and the truck was sold to me new and underneath the back seat was white with mold bc the back glass has been leaking and I didn’t know until I had my truck detailed. 2014 Ram 1500 standing water in storage areas under rear seat. Wet carpet and strong mildew smell. I believe water finds it way in through the third brake light which is not properly sealed.

Our 06 Dodge Ram 1500 does the same. We replaced the back window hoping it would fix the issue. We also spent almost $4000 because of the warning lights not coming on. Had to basically have the entire truck rewired. Still having issues with this truck. It’s a financial embarrassment.

I have a ’16 Ram with this issue around the 3rd brake light and sliding window.
My 01 ram leaked around the 3rd break light and tear sliding window. Never could get it to stop. Things started rusting out. Not mention the dash that falls apart they refuse to man up to was an issue.
I fought for two months to get mine fixed. There are 4 known places the water gets in, on the 1500s. The rear window break light (Most common) the Sliding back window (if you have one), the XM radio antenna (Gasket warped) or in my case, the lesser known plastic vents behind the passenger seat and the truck bed. Every time it rained I had a foot of water in my passenger seat wells and floors.
I have a 2020 ram doing same thing!! Took it to the dealer to have them fix it but they told me that isn’t covered under their warranty I’d have to pay. I don’t have the funds for that as I’m already behind on the payment. Looks horrible inside now from water damage at back glass. They told me they’ve had multiple trucks do the same that it’s a dodge thing. Smh
If you still have a dealer bumper to bumper warranty , it does in fact cover it. If they refuse to fix it, contact Chrysler corporate customer service, that is what I had to do. If you bought used, or your bumper to bumper warranty ran out and only have the power train warranty left, you are out of luck. I had to take mine in 5 times and actually do the research myself to get them to fix it correctly. They replaced the rear break light (On back windshield) 3 times but that was not the issue, it was bent plastic vents behind the back seat wall.

Ram here in North Charleston refused to fix my window even before while under bumper to bumper errors warranty. My window also leaks with no help form Ram
If the dealer refuses to honor the warranty, contact Chrysler customer support directly. That is what I had to do after 5 failed attempts to stop my leaks. Leaks are a well known issue but my dealer acted like I was making it up.

I also have a 2017 ram. They attempted repairs 5 times and every time I was washed in with water. I had to research myself to finally realize the vents that I had never heard of. Apparently even the dealer knew nothing about those vents (According to them) and didn’t appreciate me telling them how to do their job. After calling Chrysler and filing an official complaint, 3 days later I had a rental vehicle and they called me back and said “You might be onto something with your idea on the vents”. Really you guys are professionals and do not even know how to fix your own vehicles? From a car repair shop maybe but the dealer? Come on. And they had the nerve to tell me I was the first person to ever have that issue. Chrysler seemed to say otherwise.
2017 I had water leading through vents too. I was able to spot treat myself few times to get rid of smell and it was fine, but this was part of why I went and got another so I wouldn’t have to worry about it being worse
2019 ram longhorn, leaked through brake light and rear window causing the radio frequency hub to become fully submerged with water. Warranty did not cover it. Paid nearly 3k for new radio frequency hub and entire rear window replacement.
Justin You got taken if you still had the full bumper to bumper warranty. I had to call Chrysler and they called the dealer and made them fix it free of charge. The shame is, they lowered the time of warranty for the bumper to bumper. Then the powertrain/engine warranty extends past that but only covers just that. AND, if you have not done every single maintainence required they can deny you.

Yes unfortunately my 2019 Longhorn has this defect :( the back trim is cracked and there is a constant four Oder in the cabin. It’s very disappointing to have this issue with my beautiful truck!
Yes! My 2019 Bighorn leaks and I have reached out to my local RAM dealer and they ignore me. I really want this to be resolved and have them call a warranty out for it finally…..
2019 ram 1500 bighorn 5th gen. Back window cracked and water in truck and head liner stained and wet. Had to pay to have it fixed. That’s bullshit!
My 2017 Ram Laramie, which I bought new in 17 has the water leak problem too. I can’t find out where it’s coming in. I have replaced the rear cab vents and the third brake light gasket but it still leaks. I have taken my back seats out twice so far. I’m 56 and getting hard for me to get them out. My carpet is getting moldy and everything metal around and under the seat is getting rusty. Count me in!

My 2019 just had the alternator and connecting wiring harness changed for water intrusion which the extended warranty did not want to cover. Now It currently has water intrusion to the wiring harness to the cpu which they also do not want to cover and want me to pay out of pocket. I can provide the diagnosis paperwork from ram.
Juan if you still have a warranty, contact Chrysler customer service. They can verify by your VIN # if your warranty covers this. If it does, they can call the dealer directly and pressure them to comply.
My 2019 Ram has the normal rear window frame crack and leak allowing water to enter the cab and grow mold and mildew, along with staining of the headliner and carpet! With 60K on it Dodge says tufo flufo!

I’m in the middle of a warranty claim on my 2019 1500 Ram Rebel. I’m waiting on the rear window glass to be delivered. Hopefully it gets sealed properly.
Just recently had my rear window replaced in my 2020 Rebel under warranty, because of the cracks, but I’m sure all the water intrusion has damaged my leather in some way.

Yup, just bought a 2019 Laramie longhorn from a relative with 17,119 miles on it and my back passenger side glass leaks. Gorgeous truck and looks like brand new. I’ve always HATED Chrysler vehicles but I got such a good deal that I figured I’d give them a shot. While I do like the truck, NOTHING should leak that’s not even 2 1/2 years old yet. Hopefully the dealership can fix it under warranty. I also live in Michigan

Reported to dealer and filed multiple claims with FCA. I have been on a waiting list for the window for well over 18 months, but FCA has closed my claim numerous times without replacing the window.

Absolutely!! I had to seal my rear window with silicone because it leaked water like crazy in my 2019 ram 1500. The rear window frame has 3 very visible cracks that can be seen from the inside of the cab.
My 19’ Laramie leaked , window was replaced under the warranty but leaked again and now they won’t cover because is of of warranty .
2012 and 2017 Dodge Ram 1,500 leaked and got mildew in both. Mopar said they wouldn’t pay because it wasn’t mechanical. I fixed the 12 at Dodge with my own money. The 2017 still leaks and I’ve never had help. The dealership said third tail light was fixed in 2017 but was a lie and they refuse to fix.it.

I noticed that every time it rains I get water stains and leaks in my back corners of the inside of my cab. I also noticed now my check engine light stays on and they can’t figure out what is causing it. I want to join the action

My 2019 RAM 1500 rear window frame has two cracks, one on either side of the middle rear window. I have had to odor bomb the truck twice because of mold smell. I haven’t found the water leak yet but the smell tells me there is one.

Rear window leak caused a electronic module to short out and also blew starter. Dealer was no help but mopar customer service paid for parts and I had to pay labor. No truck for six weeks.

2020 Ram 1500, rear window replaced once, about a month later it started leaking again. Was sent back to reseal the window. A few months later the window began to leak again, this time leaving large stains on my toddlers car seat. After several more visits to the dealership for “diagnosis/repair” it is no longer leaking. There continues to be a musty bad order coming from the a/c. Currently no more visible leaks in the rear cabin but sometimes feels a bit humid in the vehicle when outside in the rain. My interior and headliner are black so it is near impossible to see any stains or damage, but I’m sure there is. Company should be embarrassed to be putting out vehicles that have such a large issue.

I have a 2019 with 45000 mile on it and purchased a extended warranty my back window trim has two cracks in it and has started leaking when I take it to the car wash and my Ac has a moldy smell coming from the air vents anyway of getting help with this problem? Thanks

Cracked leaking rear window. Water would pour in when it rained, dealer eventually replaced. Has to be damage behind the headliner and who knows where else.
I have had a musty smell after hard rains. Also have had the exhaust manifold studs break off which is a common issue that can lead to further engine failures. The manufacturer knows this is a problem.

Yes! My truck won’t start after a rain storm. Truck has been at the dealer for weeks with no resolution. They seem to not be aware of any of these issues. Had a leak for a hear from third brake light, but my issue is still happening after rain.

Yes, crack on the rear window frame caused leak and dealers wont even do anything to fix this.
Water gets in through my back window and rolls under my seats into storage area. Causing bad smell and mold.
My 2020 built to serve big horn had water leaking in it for months until it got a new rear back window. The smells were awful the window was replaced and has been cleaned (at my expense) but still not satisfied with this “solution”

My Ram 1500 2019 had two cracks in the rear windshield trim that allowed water to leak through. Had to get it replaced, headliner was damp aswell.
My 2019 Ram 1500 also came with the defective rear window frame and ofcourse experienced the disaster around 40k miles, the 2 hairline cracks on both sides of the sliding window and caused a messy glass causing fogginess and visibility issues and foul snell for weeks due to rain intrusion . RAM did not cover due to being outside basic 36k mile warranty so had to be paid out if pocket.
My 2020 ram had a crack in the rear window frame and soaked the interior. It was out of warranty due to mileage and the extended warranty did not cover. Dealer compromised and replaced rear window for $100 but did nothing about the interior.
My 2013 ram 1500 has this problem from the third brake light…. My headliners is stain from all the water that has gone in!!
Only way to fix it is to take off stock rubber seal on the back and replace it with md auto & marine rubber weatherseal. Get 5/16 thick by 19/32 wide. I had done it after it was recommended by someone and never had a leak from the 3rd brake light again.

19 ram 1500, had back window replaced under warranty for leaking. 2nd one leaked. Had appointment to get the brake light check out but replaced seal on it and thr roof antenna myself and so far so good. Do have permanent stains in my headliner that nothings been done about

Yes, rear window crack & leak and had window replaced. Moldy Oder presented. Sealant from repair is now smudged and streaking when rear window is opened and closed.

2019 Ram 1500 Laramie, took to the dealer and was told it’s not covered and I have to pay out of pocket to get it fixed. I used weather strip seals to stop the water. Had to get interior detailed because of mold.

I have a 2015 ram 1500 5.7 Hemi. My right front light has water in it and my left break light has electrical issues. Sometimes I have to open and close the bed door for the light to come on.

My cab in my 2014 Dodge 1500 has numerous leaks in the cab that effects my electrical system the musty smell is alway present and my rear break/tail light assembly malfunctions as well as my windshield wipers and my back up camera.

my 2016 ram 1500 has it headliner now stained, i try to seal the brake light several times. I even replace the light with a aftermarket and seal to not avail. I have had so much water that is filled up the storage compartments under the rear seat. I lost electronic test equipment that I had stored in those compartments due to the “flooding” dealt with cabin odors as well

I have a 2015 Ram 1500 Longhorn the 3rd break light leaked from approximately 1 year after purchase I had to use caulking to and basically glue it in place to stop the leak problem is when I need to replace the bulb its a job to remove. This has been a big issue for 6 years I know of. Also behind the rear seat there are 2 flap vents so when you close the door air can escape the flaps fall off and water can get in as well you must remove both seats to have access.

My 2008 Saturn Outlook has issues with the moonroof leaking causing same issues and the sunroof drains clog all the time causing it to leak. Had the 3rd row sweating down to move and when I was finally done and put it up the whole 3 row seats are moldy and nasty.
My back window on my 2009 TRX Dodge Ram 1500 has such a bad leak that under my back set there’s a pool of water! My kids can’t even ride in the back set if it’s raining!
Third brake light leaked, definitely has a musty smell. Thankfully working in a dealership I was able to remove the stain with detail products from work. ✋🏽

The back window frame was cracked within 6 months of my 10/2018 purchase. It was replaced under warranty with an identical part #, which then cracked AGAIN, about a year later. It was then replaced with an identical part # AGAIN, and is starting to show signs of stress in the plastic coated aluminum frame above the rear sliding window, exactly the same place the other 2 cracked. I’m now out of warranty so when it happens again, it will be on my dime. This is my 6th Ram 1500, and will likely be my last.

I have a 2016 Ram Laramie Longhorn. It has had the 3rd brake light leak for quite some time. Even the prior owners must have had the problem. I fixed the problem myself, but the stain left from the water is disheartening. For what i am spending on my truck i expect better. The smell from the water is noticeable, but the looks of the stain are far worse.

My 2015 Bighorn Ecodiesel was filling up with water in the storage bins under the rear seat. It was the cabin air pressure vents located on the backside of cab in between cab and the bed. Had to remove the entire backseat to repair it. Ridiculous.

2019 Laramie Crew Cab. Can’t leave it outside when it rains or I get a drip from the roof in the rear window. Truck has a musty smell whenever exposed to rain because of it.

Have a 2020 RAM 1500 Big Horn. 49,000 miles. My rear window randomly shattered into pieces a few weeks ago just by opening the front door to get in the truck.
Turns out, I have mildew and water stains in the inside of the cab, meaning water somehow was leaking in the cab either through the 3rd brake light or the antenna.
Thank goodness for glass coverage insurance for the repair, but I still have the stain on the interior. Located in MN
My 2017 Ram also has issues with the warning lights, especially when it rains or snows, like the condensation puts the electrical on a fritz. And the smell of mildew.
I had my rear window replaced in my 2021 Ram for the leak issue. I’m concerned that electrical components may have been compromised. I’m in FL. Can I be included in the suit?

Had the water issue leaking in the through a busted seal and my son had a horrible reaction to the mold and mildew. Spent thousands of dollars at two different dermatologist. Had to hire an attorney to actually get the dealership we bought the truck from to completely tear out the interior floor, seats and dash to clean it all out. Dealer had the truck for almost 3 months. It was a 1500 Dodge Ram. Never could get the smell of the mold & mildew to go away,.
2014 Ram 1500, water intrusion down back glass soaked carpeting with mildew smell. Found loose screw on 3rd brake light, removed lens and caulked, reinstalled lens.
2021 my 2018 ram truck was totaled out because of mold. Dealership wouldn’t even work with me.
2020 Ram 1500. They’ve replaced the back window, brake light, and antenna. But, they refuse to replace the headliner, which is stained from the window, up about a foot up, and from side to side.
