SELINSGROVE–The Central Mountain Wildcats (0-7) hit the road Friday night and traveled to Selinsgrove to take on the Seals (5-2) in a conference matchup. It was one of those tough nights again for Central Mountain, as the Seals defeated the Wildcats 42-6 on Selinsgrove’s homecoming night.

“When you haven’t had a ton of consistent success, then you have breakdowns,” Central Mountain coach Shanon Manning said following the game. “It can be a variety of things. That’s just what happens.”

The Wildcats began the game with the football and were stopped by good defense on their first drive. After a good punt by Central Mountain, the Wildcat defense stood up the Seals first offensive drive and forced them into a three-and-out scenario.

On the next drive, Brady Myers led Central Mountain to a couple of first downs to move the chains, but solid defense from the Seals forced another punt from the Wildcats. At this point, both teams could not find any type of rhythm on offense.

But that changed when the Seals got the ball back. With 4:33 left in the first quarter, Selinsgrove running back Tucker Teats used his quick feet to brush past Central Mountain defenders for a 25-yard touchdown.

On the ensuing drive for Central Mountain, the Wildcats were forced to punt. Selinsgrove’s special teams came up with a blocked punt that put them deep in Central Mountain territory. A few plays later, the Seals RB Teats was back into the endzone for his second touchdown of the night. Selinsgrove totaled two touchdowns in less than five minutes to make the score 14-0.

To begin the second quarter, Central Mountain began to pick up their play a little bit. RB Rocco Serafini was someone who was all over the place tonight for the Wildcats, making appearances on special teams as well as carrying the ball eight times.

But his presence was not enough. Following a three-and-out to begin the quarter, Seals RB Teats was back into the endzone for his third touchdown of the night. This time it was a 50-yard run for the junior, giving him 82 yards for the half and the Seals three touchdowns on three straight drives.

On the following Wildcat drive, quarterback Brady Myers made a nice 15-yard run to keep the drive alive for Central Mountain. But the junior QB got hurt on the play and would sit for the remainder of the game. With backup QB Tom Sprague entering the game, the Wildcats had to make some adjustments.

“Tommy always keeps his composure,” coach Manning said. “He doesn’t let the emotion of the game get to him; He doesn’t go outside the realm. He does what he needs to do and he’s a very coachable kid.”

On his second pass attempt after entering the contest, Sprague threw the game’s first interception to Selinsgrove DB Caleb Hicks. A few plays later, Seals QB Mark Pastore called his own number and rushed for a 1-yard keeper, making the score 28-0 at halftime.

The Seals received the ball to begin the second half and picked up right where they left off in the first half. Two plays into the quarter, Selinsgrove RB Garrett Paradis scored on a 58-yard run to make the score 35-0 not even one minute into the quarter.

The Wildcats would again be forced into another three-and-out situation. A few plays later–with second and third string players in for both teams–Seals RB Philip Gesumaria rushed 71 yards for a big Seals touchdown after a Central Mountain defensive breakdown.

Later on in the quarter, the Wildcats finally found some ground on offense. Wildcats RB Carnell Noone and Jacob Weaver both helped Central Mountain keep drives alive with impressive runs down the field. Although the Wildcats could not convert on a fourth down, they would eventually get the ball back when their defense forced a punt from Selinsgrove.

“We were able to get sub some of our younger guys in and get some good matchups in our favor and we were able to move the ball down the field,” coach Manning mentioned.

Noone, Garrison Lucas and Tom Sprague all made nice runs to help the Wildcats in their march down the field. Once the Wildcats got near the goal line, Central Mountain’s Sprague rushed for a 3-yard touchdown to put the Wildcats on the board with 1:36 left. The Seals would get in victory formation and finish out the game in dominant fashion, winning 42-6.

The Wildcats will take the field again next Friday when they travel on the road to New Holland to take on Garden Spot. The Spartans are coming off a 37-29 loss to conference opponent Twin Valley.
