At least 1,570 people have been killed and almost 6,000 injured in floods and earthquakes that have struck Afghanistan in the last two months, according to a Taliban official.

More and more moose from Idaho and Utah are making their way into Nevada, where they’re finding wilderness to their liking without the kind of help from humans most species get when they relocate. Irregular and sporadic moose sightings in Nevada date back to the 1950s, but about a decade ago, observations began to climb in the northeast corner of the state. By 2018, the Nevada Department of Wildlife estimated there were somewhere between 30 and 50 moose in the state. Now, their numbers total well above 100. Wildlife officials say it’s the first time a big game species has made a comeback in Nevada without a concentrated relocation effort.

California lawmakers adjourned this year’s legislative session at the onset of a protracted triple-digit heat wave. That fed some of their final debates over climate change and keeping the lights on by propping up an aging nuclear reactor. They left Democratic Gov. Gavin Newsom in the hot seat, with 30 days to sign or reject hundreds of bills. He'll consider proposals on abortion, climate change, criminal justice, mental health and workers' rights, among many others from the legislative session that ended Thursday. But many of the bills are measures he either backed or sought himself from his fellow Democrats who control legislative supermajorities.

Substitute Ben Chilwell scored one goal and set up the winner for Kai Havertz as Chelsea rallied for a 2-1 win over West Ham in the English Premier League. The Blues had a disputed VAR decision to thank for the victory. Maxwel Cornet thought he scored an injury-time equalizer for West Ham at Stamford Bridge but referee Andy Madley ruled it out after a video replay and judged Jarrod Bowen fouled goalkeeper Edouard Mendy. West Ham manager David Moyes was furious with the decision which gave Chelsea a much-needed victory after losing two of its previous three games.

Ivan Toney can’t miss. The Brentford striker completed his hat trick before Leeds manager Jesse Marsch was sent off in the west London club’s 5-2 win in the English Premier League. Toney has never missed from the spot for Brentford. He converted his 18th consecutive penalty and powered home a free kick later in the first half. A clever lob over goalkeeper Illan Meslier in the 58th minute nailed the hat trick. Six minutes later, Marsch was issued a straight red card after the American manager argued for a penalty. Luis Sinisterra and Marc Roca scored for Leeds. Bryan Mbeumo and Yoane Wissa added late goals for the hosts.

A judge has dismissed a federal lawsuit filed against the city of Portland, the mayor and the Multnomah County district attorney by the estate of a man who was shot and killed after a pro-Trump car rally in 2020. The suit had alleged that negligence around increasingly violent clashes between competing groups in Portland created an environment that encouraged lawlessness and led to Aaron “Jay” Danielson’s killing. The Oregonian/OregonLive reports U.S. Magistrate Judge Youlee Yim You found that the city and the mayor took no specific action that placed Danielson in greater danger that night. She dismissed the lawsuit’s due process and negligence claims.

Saturday Summaries from English football (home teams listed first):

Another milestone goal from Harry Kane has helped Tottenham earn a 2-1 win over Fulham to extend its unbeaten start to the English Premier League. Kane struck in the 75th minute from close range to move beyond Andy Cole into third in the list of all-time top scorers in the competition’s history with 188. It was also his 43rd effort in a Premier League London derby, which put him level with previous outright record-holder Thierry Henry. His goal added to Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg’s opener for Antonio Conte’s team. Aleksandar Mitrovic scored late on for Fulham to set up a nervy finale. Spurs held on to make it four wins and two draws from their opening six matches.

Bournemouth has come from two goals down at halftime against Nottingham Forest to win 3-2 in the English Premier League. Bournemouth lost 9-0 at Liverpool last weekend and manager Scott Parker was sacked on Tuesday. The team looked on course for another defeat under the temporary charge of Gary O’Neil. Forest led at the break through Cheikhou Kouyate’s header and Brennan Johnson’s penalty. But O’Neil’s men got back in it thanks to Philip Billing’s wonder strike from distance and drew level on Dominic Solanke’s acrobatic effort. The memorable comeback was completed three minutes from time when they capitalized on poor defending by Scott McKenna and Jaidon Anthony converted the winner.

Daniel Podence has notched the only goal as Wolves beat Southampton at Molineux for their first English Premier League victory. The little Portugal winger scuffed his finish in first-half stoppage time but it was enough to lift Bruno Lage’s side out of the bottom three in the standings. Southampton had a second-half effort by Che Adams ruled out for handball and the striker hit the crossbar with another header. Ralph Hasenhuttl’s side was unable to follow up their midweek home win against Chelsea and slipped to a third league defeat.

Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis wants a federal judge to throw out a free speech lawsuit filed by a Democratic prosecutor he suspended from office over statements about not pursuing criminal charges in abortion, transgender rights and certain low-level cases. The Republican governor told U.S. District Judge Robert Hinkle of Tallahassee in a filing late Friday that Andrew Warren _ removed last month as elected state attorney in Hillsborough County, which includes Tampa _ cannot claim First Amendment protection for his comments on how he would handle these hot-button political issues. A hearing is set Sept. 10 on Warren's lawsuit.

It might be time for Liverpool to start worrying about its slow start to the English Premier League. Jurgen Klopp’s team dropped points for the fourth time in six games after an eventful 0-0 draw at Everton in the Merseyside derby on Saturday. Mohamed Salah hit the post in the 95th minute. Chelsea has VAR to thank for not being in a similar position because West Ham had an injury-time equalizer ruled out for a foul at Stamford Bridge. That allowed the Blues to hold on for a 2-1 come-from-behind win. Tottenham’s start to the league has been more impressive. Antonio Conte’s team remains unbeaten after beating Fulham 2-1 at home in another London derby.

Bayern Munich's 1-1 draw at Union Berlin has helped Freiburg move to the top of the Bundesliga after beating Bayer Leverkusen 3-2. Bayern and Union were left tied on points in third and fourth place, respectively. Freiburg is one point in front and ahead of second-place Borussia Dortmund on goal difference. All four teams are unbeaten after five rounds. Sheraldo Becker struck for Union in the 12th minute. Joshua Kimmich equalized in the 15th. Freiburg took the league lead after coming out on top of a thriller in Leverkusen. The game was level at 1-1 and 2-2 before Ritsu Doan took the 72nd-minute winner.

‘Dreamers,' long a symbol of immigrant youth, are increasingly easing into middle age as eligibility requirements have been frozen since 2012, when the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program was introduced. The Biden administration recently released a rule that sticks closely to DACA as it was introduced in 2012 _ a legal maneuver intended to insulate it from a legal challenge winding its way through an appeals court in New Orleans. DACA advocates were disappointed that the administration didn't expand age eligibility. The average age of a DACA recipient has climbed to more than 28 years.

“National Cinema Day” is bringing the big screen to moviegoers for a small price - no more than $3 -  as American theaters look to fill seats during the late summer lull. On Saturday only, movie tickets are just $3 in the vast majority of theaters. The Cinema Foundation, a non-profit arm of the National Association of Theater Owners, announced the plans Aug. 28, saying the nationwide discount day would be offered on more than 30,000 screens in more than 3,000 theaters.  Major chains, including AMC and Regal Cinemas, are participating, as are all major film studios. Labor Day weekend is traditionally one of the slowest for movie-going.

North Carolina will be without top wide receiver Josh Downs for its game at Appalachian State. The Tar Heels announced just before kickoff that Downs would not play due to a lower body injury. Cleveland-based KeyBank says hackers stole personal data including Social Security numbers, addresses and account numbers of an unspecified number of its home mortgage customers. It says the data was lost in the breach of a Georgia insurance services company and compromised the data of its corporate clients. The Georgia company, Overby-Seawall, did not return phone messages or respond to emails sent to executives seeking comment. A letter sent to an affected KeyBank customer said the data was stolen July 5. KeyBank operates in 15 states and has close to $200 billion in assets.

Police say a man was killed by Milwaukee officers after he led them on a chase into a busy downtown bar district, then got out of his vehicle and opened fire on them. One bystander, a 22-year-old Hudson woman, was injured in the Friday night shootout. Authorities have not said if she was shot by police or by the man. Police say her injuries are not life-threatening. Police say the 47-year-old man was wanted in a homicide, and police were trying to arrest him when he fled and led them downtown. A video circulating on social media shows at least five police cars following a truck before multiple shots ring out.

Chase Briscoe, Ross Chastain and Daniel Suarez are also in the playoffs for the first time. There's excitement for all of them, along with a bunch of uncertainty. The playoffs begin Sunday with the Southern 500 at Darlington Raceway.

Max Verstappen produced a brilliant final lap to take the pole position for Sunday’s Dutch Grand Prix just ahead of Charles Leclerc. The Red Bull driver edged Leclerc’s Ferrari by just .021 seconds to huge roars from Verstappen’s Orange Army of fans. But the session was interrupted earlier when a flare was thrown onto the track. Governing body FIA says the person throwing it was removed from the stands by security. The widespread use of flares from Verstappen’s fans has been a concern at some races, particularly at the Red Bull Ring in Austria in July and at last weekend’s Belgian GP — both packed with Verstappen supporters.

The U.K. will begin its autumn COVID-19 vaccination campaign in the coming weeks after authorizing booster shots made by Pfizer and Moderna that have been modified to target both the original virus and the widely circulating omicron variant. The Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency said Saturday that it had approved the Pfizer vaccine for used in people age 12 an older after finding it was both safe and effective. The agency authorized the Moderna vaccine last month. The government will offer the vaccine to everyone 50 and over, as well as frontline healthcare workers and other groups considered to be particularly at risk of serious illness as the National Health Service prepares for a surge in infections this winter.
